Kathy Rossell is the Coordinator of the Learning Resource Center (LRC), where she oversees a team of tutors in providing English language support to INTO Mason students, international graduate teaching assistants, and other multilingual GMU students. Kathy has managed operations in the LRC since 2015 and has welcomed the opportunity to develop and expand the center’s offerings to address students’ needs in a diverse and ever-changing environment.
After graduating with Highest Distinction from the University of Virginia with a BA in Foreign Affairs, Kathy worked at the U.S. Department of State as both a communications specialist for Near East and South Asian Affairs, and as a Foreign Affairs Officer in the Bureau of International Organizations. Having a passion for learning and teaching, Kathy embarked on an 18-year journey of providing home instruction for her three children. Moreover, she established a professional proofreading and copy-editing business, and she used her entrepreneurial skills to create, lead, and grow programs in a number of community-based organizations. In addition, she designed and taught introductory and advanced public speaking courses to high school students for 7 years.
Kathy earned her MA in English/Linguistics and a graduate certificate in TESL from George Mason University, and she has taught Academic English courses in pronunciation, presentation skills, and advanced vocabulary. She has also designed and taught courses for Graduate Pathway students in English grammar. While at GMU, she received awards for excellence from the Linguistics Department and INTO Mason.
Having a life-long fascination with languages, Kathy has studied Arabic, Farsi, Swahili, and Spanish, and first became interested in teaching ESL through volunteering with her church. In addition to being a self-described grammar “nerd,” Kathy is also a “bird nerd” and enjoys hiking, spending time outdoors, and playing strategy board games (Wingspan, her current favorite) with her family.
